The IT guys who are using Windows Phone are going to get interesting stuff in this article. This article is a part 1 that explains Windows Phone 10 Insider Preview and How to upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Insider Preview. The part 2 will be completely opposite of this article, for folks who find the upgrade annoying, buggy then part 2 will help them downgrading back to Windows 8.1.

Back in February 2015, Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview that presented the glimpse of upcoming stable version of Windows Phone 10. There are several new and advanced features that are not available in Windows 8.1.
Initially, there were number of Lumia devices supported for Windows 10 Insider Preview but now more devices are supported

Warning – Upgrading to Windows 10 Insider Preview may be annoying for you as this is the preview and has bugs in it. You may also end up breaking your device, so do it carefully and take backup of the entire phone before you upgrade.

How To Upgrade To Windows 10 Insider Preview

Prerequisites –

  • Sign Up for Windows Insider Program
  • Battery more than 80%
  • Fast Internet Connection

Step 1. Backup Windows Phone

The first step is to backup your phone completely. Copy all of your personal data to USB or Laptop. You will get your data if something messy happens.

Step 2. Sign Up For Windows Insider Program

Windows 10 Insider Preview is not available for everyone. People who are interested in the Insider Preview will need to sign up first for Insider Preview Program. Don’t worry It’s easy.
To sign up for Insider Preview, simply install Windows Insider app from store. Or sign up from Insider Program web page here.

Enroll into slow & fast windows 10 insider preview
 
 
 
 
 
 
Tap on “Get preview builds” and the app will ask for your Microsoft account. Enter your credentials and login. The next screen will ask you to enrol in either of the two types of updates, Insider Slow and Insider Fast.
Insider Slow – Insider Slow does not give you frequent updates. It does not provide inital updates of the Insider Preview. (It may still be buggy)
Insider Fast – Insider Fast provides more frequent updates. It provides all the initial updates of the Insider preview.
Upgrade Windows Phone 8.1 To Windows 10 insider previewAfter selecting updates frequency, confirm your joining and that’s all. You’ve now joined Windows 10 Insider Preview. To get the Windows 10 Preview updates simply update your phone from Settings > Phone Update.
Download the available updates and restart your phone. Installation may take longer, so keep the phone on and keep patience.
After the installation completed, enjoy the latest features of Windows 10 Insider Preview. Don’t worry if you don’t like it. You can downgrade back to Previous stable version. We’ll help doing so in the next part of this article. Till then enjoy the preview build.
