15 Cheapest Electric Cars With More Autonomy You Can Buy Now

The automobile industry is quite clear, the future of individual mobility passes through the electric car. Some manufacturers do not close doors and also bet without renouncing the electric, by CNG (compressed natural gas) as a transition solution.

But if you are one of those who do not want to wait and consider making the leap to electric, these are the 15 cheapest electric cars currently on sale and the nine cars with greater autonomy. By the way, it turns out to be an instant revealer of the electric car in the market.

At the time of buying an electric car, we would all like to be able to access a Tesla Model S, a Model X or a Jaguar i-Pace, even the Audi e-tron would be tempting, but with prices exceeding 80,000 euros for cars. Access models of that group are not a valid option for all families. Even so, there are attractive and affordable proposals if you want to take the step and drive an electric car.

The purchase price is not everything. In the absence of a network of Tesla superchargers (BMW, Ford, Daimler, and the Volkswagen Group are planning to open their IONITY network in 2018), the autonomy of the electric car is still one of the key points to make a hole in the market. For this reason, we have also ordered the electric cars with a greater average real autonomy of the market in a second list.

These lists only include the cars that you can currently buy in the market. That’s why you will not see the Audi e-tron ( although you can already book one), the Jaguar i-Pace or the Tesla Model 3, or the promising Hyundai Kona electric.

The cheapest 15 electric cars

Renault ZOE ZE 40 R90 (from 21,630 euros)

Aesthetically it is practically the same as the previous ZOE, but the new 40 kWh battery of the Renault ZOE ZE 40 changes everything. And now you can count on 300 km of real autonomy. Renault proposes from just over 21,000 euros with separate battery rental (69.36 euros/month) and the R90 engine, 92 hp and no possibility of fast charging (for this you have to choose the Q90 engine that loses some 30 km in autonomy). If you buy the batteries, the price rises almost 8,000 euros on average.

Citroën C-Zero (from 21,879 euros)

The Citroën C-Zero is the twin of the Peugeot iOn and the Mitsubishi i-Miev. Well, actually, it’s a Mitsubishi i-Miev that also markets the two galas. It is narrow, small and with a tiny trunk. It is of a strictly urban use, as much by dimensions as by autonomy, of about 100 km in real conditions of use. The Citroén C-Zéro stands out for its price, much more affordable than that of its two brothers.

Tazzari EV Zero EM2 Space (from 22,800 euros)

It is the only proposal of the Italian manufacturer approved as a car and not as a quad and for which the driver’s license is required. The manufacturer announces it for a price rate of 17,900 euros, but you have to add yes or yes 4,900 euros of battery (you will not buy the car without a battery …), hence the final price of 22,800 euros.

However, Tazzari’s trade policy is somewhat strange. For those 22,800 euros, you have a two-seater to the smart fortwo but exclusively dark gray. If you want to customize the roof, the body or the rims with a different color, it will cost you 670 euros for each element. And if the dark gray tapestry does not convince you either, it will be 1,290 euros to have some color. Yes, it’s one of the cheapest electric cars on the market, but only in theory.

Citroën e-Méhari (from 23,706 euros)

The Citroën e-Méhari was designed by Citroën for the market of hotels, resorts and car rentals in beach areas. Its size and autonomy (120 km) are used for recreational use. Although now thanks to a hardtop version, it can also be an original urban car.

smart EQ fortwo (from 23,737 euros)

The smart fortwo electric drive changes its name and is renamed smart EQ fortwo, in line with the rest of the Daimler group and its commitment to electric mobility. The rest of the car does not change. Same battery of 17.6 kWh and same real autonomy of about 100 km. If you are not going to leave the city, there is no more urban car than this smart electric.

Kia Soul EV (from 23.876 euros)

The Kia Soul EV is one of the electrical veterans of the Spanish market since it has been with them since 2012. And maybe that’s why its autonomy of 150 km is no longer up to the Nissan Leaf, Renault ZOE or BMW i3. It retains the original design, the livability and the boot of the Kia Soul combustion engine. Its rate price is exorbitant for what it offers, but the brand systematically applies a discount of 9,674 euros.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric (from 24,225 euros)

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is the most recent bet of the Korean brand (the electric Kona is not yet for sale) and the most superb. Hyundai proposes the same car with three different versions of propulsion: internal combustion, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a 100% electric version.

It has a 120 hp engine and a 28 kWh battery for a real autonomy of about 200 km. Its official sale price is high, but like Kia, as a rule, carries out a consistent discount of 10,700 euros, leaving the electric Ioniq at 24,225 euros.

smart EQ forfour (from 24,402 euros)

The smart forfour electric drive is renamed smart EQ forfour. It is still a very compact four-seater with an 81 hp engine and a real autonomy just over 100 km. It is a second perfect car to go to work or the first ideal car for someone who does not usually leave too much of the city. It also stands out for its use of the internet of things, which applies to the entire smart range, with new services of private car sharing and curious and very useful parcels.

Mitsubishi i-MiEV (from 25,000 euros)

The twin of the Citroën CZ-éro and Peugeot ion is the original model. It is one of the pioneers of electric mobility in the market (it has been commercialized since 2009). It was developed following the Japanese norm of kei-cars, as far as dimensions are concerned. The kei-cars are cars in which it is not necessary to prove a parking space in order to register them. Thus, the i-MIEV will be limited to an urban use. The characteristics are similar to those of the two Gallic models.

Peugeot iOn (from 26,450 euros)

Of the trio of urbanites Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Citroën C-Zéro, and Peugeot iOn, the Peugeot model is the most expensive. In any case, although they are an ideal proposal to move in urban areas, their price and limited autonomy have limited them to the fleet market for private and public entities. We would not recommend the Peugeot iOn for a particular use. For its price, there are much more interesting alternatives.

The smart fortwo electric drive in its Cabrio version is called smart EQ fortwo, in line with the other models of the brand and the Daimler group and its commitment to electric mobility. With respect to the “coupe”, it equips the same 17.6 kWh battery and proposes the same real autonomy of about 100 km. But it is one of the two electric convertibles available in the market.

Volkswagen e-up! (from 28,380 euros)

In recent years, Volkswagen has stepped on the accelerator with the electrification of its range. One of the first was the small e-Up !. With respect to the internal combustion models, the habitability and comfort of driving are maintained.

Although with its autonomy of little more than 100 km, it limits it to urban displacements (on the highway, the autonomy would decrease in a vertiginous way), its price is high for what it offers in terms of autonomy, habitability, and technology. A Hyundai Ioniq or Renault Zoe is much more interesting and affordable proposals.

Nissan Leaf 2018 40 kWh (from 30,300 euros)

The new generation of the Nissan Leaf, one of the best selling electric cars in the world, leaves behind the criticism we made to the previous generation. The design is more consensual – not conservative -, the chassis has improved significantly and has a footprint that is close to that of the other Nissan. Above all, it now has a very dignified real autonomy (270 km) thanks to its 40 kWh battery, at the same time that its engine gains almost 50% power, now reaches 150 HP (110 kW) and 320 Nm of torque engine.

BMW i3 94Ah (from 38,200 euros)

A BMW in the ranking of the most affordable electric? Yes, the BMW i3 94Ah is placed in front of the Volkswagen e-Golf for a difference of 235 euros in its favor. The restyling of the BMW i3 brought improvements in its battery that allow it to improve its autonomy. The i3’s electrical system consists of an electric motor of 125 kW (170 hp), 250 Nm of maximum torque and a lithium-ion battery of 33 kWh.

Volkswagen e-Golf (from 38,435 euros)

The reference in the compact segment also has an electric version: the Volkswagen e-Golf. This model has a single engine that drives the front wheels. With a power of 100 kW (136 hp), it turns up to 12,000 rpm and delivers 290 Nm. It is associated with a 35.8 kWh lithium-ion battery.

It offers a real autonomy of between 180 and almost 200 km. It is one of the most expensive in our table, but it does not have equipment superior to the rest of its rivals (the semi-autonomous driving system, for example, is an option that costs 985 euros).
